Meadowlark

Performing Arts

Starting in 2024, Laura Killip plans to enact her three year plan to turn Meadowlark Performing Arts into a valued pillar of the Mid-Willamette Valley Theatre Community. Her goal is to create opportunity for theatre makers of all ages to create, learn, and grow.

Year One
Fundraising
Goal
$2000

This year we will write and compose the music for the first musical. For this first production, Laura will be the playwright and composer. The musical, “Rose Red and Lily White” is inspired by Grimm’s fairytales and aims to showcase the wide array of talents and skills of the students Laura has taught, directed, and worked with over the past 14 years.

The intentional structuring of the script will lend itself to fun, active rehearsals that keep everyone involved, smooth directing transitions, creative opportunities, and the ability to challenge each person at their level, without leaving anyone overwhelmed. With this structure, each member of the cast, crew, and production team will grow and shine.

Year Two
Fundraising
Goal
$8000

Year two will introduce one of the most exciting new ideas: We’ll launch a workshop of “Rose Red and Lily White” with advanced theatre makers and performing arts teachers (primarily college and high schoolers) in a professional, paid setting. The hope is to raise enough funds to hire a directing team, stage manager, and actors to finesse the script, record a cast album for future student reference, and build a preliminary version of the set so that next year’s youth camp and production can hit the ground running.

The final product of our workshop will result in an open air performance in Monmouth, OR. Not only will this production be an opportunity for new professionals, but it will also be an excellent opportunity for young audiences, perhaps even those attending their first ever play!

Once the workshop production closes, the next musical will start it’s planning and writing stages later in the summer. Right now, Laura is considering an adaptation of “Puss in Boots” for the second show.

2025

Year three will bring the premiere student performances for “Rose Red and Lily White”. This production will involve a three-week long day camp culminating in performances open to the public. Our professional team of directors and a stage manager will partner with high school and college age counselors to teach young performers their singing, dancing, and acting parts during this fun and creative day camp. We’re still on the lookout for the perfect venue, so if you want to bring this opportunity to your community, please reach out! If there’s enough interest we could even have more than one production, possibly in different locations, over the summer.

After “Rose Red and Lily White” closes, our next show, “Puss in Boots” will head into the workshop phase. Again, we’ll hire advanced theatre makers (college and high schoolers) to workshop the musical, find sticky points, and prepare materials for the full camp production the following year. That workshop will also culminate in sharing the work with the community.

Then late that summer we’ll start writing our next show!

As you can see, the plan for Meadowlark Performing Arts fills a valuable role in the Mid-Willamette Valley Theatre Community by bringing opportunities for children, teens, college students, and new teachers/directors to learn and develop their skills in musical theatre and beyond, while creating and performing fun and engaging productions for their communities to enjoy. The ongoing developmental nature of this program will give young performers a structured program that allows them to find their place and look forward to advancing to increasingly more challenging roles as they grow and develop new skills. It will also give performing arts teachers and directors a professional opportunity in which to develop and share their valuable skills and experience.

She encourages her students to challenge themselves and she helps them find and create opportunities to perform if that’s their goal.

Kind Words

“Laura is one of the kindest people I have ever met!! Studying with her brought me so much joy and was the highlight of my week. I couldn’t wait to get back to my lesson each week to know there was someone who has one of the kindest hearts I have ever met.”

—Delaney, student age 15

“Laura’s guidance and encouragement have been such a big help to our child and our whole family.”

— Julie, parent of student

Laura is very enthusiastic and patient and also gets stuff done.  I learned how to project my voice.  Laura is an amazing teacher.  She’s also a very good artist.

— Indira, student age 12

“Laura has been a joy to work with.  This was our first experience with voice lessons, and our daughter has learned so much the last couple years.  Laura has an enormous amount of energy and has many ideas of how to work with neurodiverse students. Her studio is a welcoming environment, and she has been very flexible with scheduling.  Laura encouraged our daughter to perform in her first public recital, which was held at a cafe with a live audience and band.  It was out of her comfort zone, but she was excited to do it and did amazingly well.  Working with Laura, our daughter has grown as a vocalist.  We love Laura!”

Erin, parent of student

“Laura is so involved with students and really creates an atmosphere of safety, acceptance, and love. She is truly passionate about our students and the work we do in the Creative Arts. She is reliable and knowledgeable.”

— Nicole, collaborator & parent of student
